Since 1982, Robert Stewart Architects has been providing logistical solutions to the Port of Long Beach and the Port's tenants. The Port of Long Beach is a "landlord port," meaning it leases its facilities to private companies such as shipping lines and cargo-handling firms. The buildings leased to tenants are owned by the Port and the Port has made a commitment that all new buildings constructed by the Port will meet the U.S. Green Council's standards known as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design or LEED. In order for the Port of Long Beach to maintain its leadership as a major transportation and trade center, the Port is consolidating and reconfiguring existing terminals and is constantly upgrading its infrastructure to facilitate growing cargo volumes.
